HOUSTON, Dec. 7 -- Indonesia has awarded a consortium of French company TotalFinaElf SA and Japanese company Inpex Corp. the Donggala block north of the Makassar Straits.

The 3,820 sq km block is in 1,800-2,500 m of water 75 km from TotalFinaElf's Tunu field. TotalFinaElf will operate Donggala block with 50%, while Inpex owns the rest.

A 3D seismic study has been carried out on the block. The companies will begin drilling next year.

The French group said the acquisition is part of a strategy to strengthen its position in the deep offshore.

The TotalFinaElf-Inpex association produces more than 500,000 boe/d in Indonesia. It supplies 60% of the gas requirements of the 22.25 million tonnes/year capacity Bontang LNG plant.
