ANOTHER U.K. ONSHORE GAS PIPELINE PLANNED

Aug. 27, 1990
Kinetica Ltd., a joint venture of Conoco (U.K.) Ltd, and PowerGen plc, plans a major addition to its independent gas pipeline proposal in Britain. It will lay a 175 mile line from the Conoco gas terminal at Theddlethorpe on the east coast of England to London and build a large gas fired power generation plant at Isle of Grain, east of the capital. Kinetica soon will begin detailed engineering studies and consultations with the U.K. Department of Energy, planning authorities, and others.

The joint venture earlier applied for its first major transmission system in Britain, a 31 mile link between the Theddlethorpe gas terminal and a cogeneration plant under construction for PowerGen at Killingholme.

NEW SYSTEM

Kinetica plans to apply next year for a DOE permit to lay its Midlands-London line. Construction is to begin in summer 1993, with completion of the system scheduled for late 1995.

The 1.2 bcfd capacity pipeline will cost 200 million ($106 million). It will be a direct competitor to British Gas plc's pipeline system,

The new line will run from the Theddlethorpe area to Waddington, south of Lincoln, where a monitoring and metering unit will be installed. A 36 in. line will then run east of London, under the Thames River, making a final connection to the Isle of Grain. There PowerGen has received permission to convert a large oil fired power station to dual gas and oil fuel.

The line also could link into PowerGen's Rye House site, north of London, where there are plans, still requiring U.K. government approval, for a cogeneration plant.

Kinetica said a second line could be built from Waddington to a coal fired power plant at Cottam, Nottinghamshire, where PowerGen wants to install gas cycle topping to improve efficiency. The line could form the first stage of a new gas system into the Birmingham area.
