HOUSTON, July 30
– Melrose Resources PLC, Edinburgh, said its Kavarna East-1 wildcat in the Black Sea off Bulgaria found 89 ft of net gas pay with 29% average porosity and has a preliminary recovery estimate of 12 bcf.

The well, 10 km east of Melrose-operated Galata gas field, is to be developed via low-cost tieback to the Galata platform. It topped the Paleocene reservoir at 2,753 ft and found a 130-ft gross gas column.

The reservoir structure is thought to be filled with gas to the spill point. This provides further evidence that the regional biogenic gas source is substantial and that gas volumes may have migrated farther north into the central area of the Galata block, Melrose said. It will shoot seismic over this area in 2011.

Kavarna East lies between the Kavarna and Kaliakra discoveries, with a combined 74 bcf of reserves, that are also being tied back to the platform.

The Jupiter jack-up will install the subsea tree at Kaliakra and may then be used to drill the Kaliakra East prospect if seabed conditions will allow it to operate at the required water depth.
