US rig count edges up by 1 rig to 1,586

HOUSTON, July 30 -- US drilling activity increased with the addition of 1 rig, bringing the total working units to 1,586, up from 948 in the comparable period a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Land rigs were down by 1 unit to 1,556 working. Offshore, the number of rigs increased by 2 to 16, including a 2-rig increase to 16 in the Gulf of Mexico. Inland waters activity remained the same.
Of the US rigs working, 972 were drilling for natural gas, down by 10 compared to the previous week. Rigs drilling for oil reached 603, 12 more than the previous week. There were 11 rotary rigs unclassified. Horizontal drilling dropped by 5 units to 853 rotary rigs. Directional drilling increased by 2 to 220 units.
Louisiana and Wyoming were up by 3 rigs each to 187 and 44, respectively. North Dakota, Arkansas, California gained 2 rigs each for respective counts of 128, 40, and 40. Texas and Colorado were up by 1 rig each to a respective 675 and 63. Pennsylvania and Alaska were unchanged at 88 and 5, respectively. New Mexico and West Virginia each dropped 2 rigs for respective counts of 69 and 25. Oklahoma’s rig count dropped by 9 to 123.
Canada’s count increased by 14 to 363 rotary rigs working, compared with 200 in the same period last year.
