HOUSTON, Nov. 3
– Ecopetrol established the presence of oil in the Eocene Carbonera formation on the Cano Sur block in Colombia’s Llanos basin.

Ecopetrol, operator, and Shell Exploration and Production Colombia Cano Sur Gmbh hold 50-50 interests in Cano Sur, which lies 185 miles east-southeast of Bogota and just west of Quifa and giant Rubiales heavy oil fields.

The Mago-1 vertical stratigraphic test well in eastern Meta Province on the eastern part of the Cano Sur block went to 3,300 ft and cored 120 ft of Carbonera basal sands. Net reservoir thickness is 20 ft with 30% average porosity, which Ecopetrol said confirms the presence of a petroleum system.

The companies will continue evaluating data from Mago-1 and plan further drilling on the block, Ecopetrol said.
