Apr. 19-21: "Energy: Bridge to a New Global Economy" is the theme of the 2009 Deloitte Energy Conference at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center at National Harbor, Md., near Washington DC.

Why it matters: As it has in previous years, the conference brings speakers from a cross-section of the world's energy industries to discuss challenges and key developments. Most of the sessions reflect the current emphasis on alternative and renewable technologies, but there are a few of interest to oil and gas producers and processors. Retired US Air Force General Charles F. Wald, former deputy commander of the US European Command, will discuss implications of emerging US energy policies on development and security at the luncheon keynote address on Apr. 20. Earlier that morning, Michael E. Webber, associate director of the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss the interdependence of water and energy and the benefits of responding to their supply constraints in tandem.

The single session devoted to oil and gas will feature Tom Fry, president of the National Ocean Industries Association, and other leading association executives discussing access, infrastructure and policy matters on Apr. 21. Later that day, there will be sessions on shaping energy markets through tax policy and impacts of climate change regulations on financial reporting and future business implications.

A bonus at this conference are the Deloitte specialists who will be on hand, including Greg Aliff, vice chairman and US energy and resources leader; Gary Adams, vice chairman and US oil and gas leader; Branko Terzic, energy and resources regulatory policy leader; Clint Stretch, managing principal of Deloitte Tax LLP, and Joe Stanislaw, independent senior advisor to Deloitte's energy practice.
