US Sen. Mary L. Landrieu (D-La.), following the Mar. 18 federal offshore oil and gas lease sale in New Orleans which attracted more than $993.6 million in bids, including nearly $6.5 million of bids for 13 tracts in the so-called 181 South area of the Gulf of Mexico:

"Today's lease sales are another reminder of the importance of getting our economy turned around. Louisiana will receive a share of revenue generated from tract bids in the 181 South Area, a result of the Domenici-Landrieu law we passed in 2006.

"But today's totals are more modest than we would have liked. Stemming this economic downturn and nurturing a climate of investment for our oil and gas companies will mean much bigger returns for Louisiana in future lease sales.

"These offshore areas are increasing our domestic supply of oil. To end our dependence on foreign oil, the US must take a comprehensive approach which includes increasing domestic oil and gas production along with a commitment to alternative fuels. I will continue to ensure Louisiana's interests are protected as Congress considers national energy policy."
