-- BHP Billiton Ltd. is the latest company to join Marine Well Containment Co. (MWCC), a not-for-profit organization for responding to a well control incident in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

Other MWCC members are ExxonMobil Corp., Chevron Corp., ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell PLC, BP PLC, Apache Corp., and Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

The company's interim containment system is ready for deployment and is capable of operating in up to 8,000 ft of water and processing up to 60,000 b/d of fluid. Work is under way to expand the system for work in 10,000 ft of water and processing 100,000 b/d of fluid. MWCC expects components of this expanded system to be delivered in 2012.

Both members and nonmembers can access the system, with nonmember use on a per well fee basis.
