HOUSTON, Jan. 7 -- In a recent update, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. reported that the fire at its Horizon oil sands upgrader in northern Alberta was extinguished at 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 6. It said immediately after the fire began at 3:30 p.m., emergency crews responded and an orderly shutdown took place. No site evacuation was required.
CNRL noted that five employees and contractors received injuries during the incident, with three being transported to a hospital in Fort McMurray. Two have since been released from the hospital and one has been moved to Edmonton for further care. Two others were treated on site for minor injuries and released.
The company said Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) has placed a stop work order at the coker unit and is restricting access to the site. CNRL and OHS currently are investigating the possible causes of the fire and determining when production will resume.
CNRL noted that it has not detected any air-quality exceedences in the plant area or the neighboring Fort McKay community.
