Nance Petroleum Co., Billings, Mont., will develop a reservoir management strategy for North Bainville field in Roosevelt County under a research grant from the Department of Energy.

BDM-Oklahoma, which operates DOE's Bartlesville, Okla., petroleum research laboratory, will work with a team of Nance geoscientists, engineers, and others on problems related to field production, operations, facilities requirements, and improved recovery process implementation.

The team will integrate existing and new core data, PVT/fluid data, log data, pressure data, and 3D seismic data into reservoir models for use in commercially or publicly available numerical simulators.

Historic performance of the field will be simulated and predictions made for the effectiveness of improved recovery techniques. Total project cost is $500,000.

The North Bainville reservoir management strategy will be offered to other operators in the region through the Colorado School of Mines, which is the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council's lead organization for the Rocky Mountain region.

DOE said, "Very few advanced recovery projects have been implemented in the Williston basin. Because of the geological similarities between the various producing intervals, reservoir management strategies developed by the team will be applicable to other reservoirs within the field and throughout the region.

"A successful reservoir management project will benefit the working interest owners in the field, as well as the diverse group of mineral interest owners, which include the Turtle Mountain tribe of North Dakota."

BDM-Oklahoma is managing two other reservoir management demonstration projects. One is examining waterflooding options for East Randolph field in Ohio, and the other seeks to improve a Citronelle field waterflood in Alabama.
