A successful appraisal well has confirmed the southern extension of Bayu-Undan gas/condensate field in the Timor Sea between Indonesia and Australia.

The Phillips Petroleum Co. group's Bayu 5 cut a 184 ft gross reservoir column with the same gas-water contact found in the previous Bayu-Undan wells.

Phillips did not flow test the well because the reservoir sands encountered were fully cored, and the section was similar to sands successfully flow-tested elsewhere in the field.

The well, drilled as an expendable appraisal well, was plugged and abandoned.

Bayu-Undan field covers an estimated 130 sq miles. Bayu 5 substantially completes the license group's appraisal drilling program.

Phillips and co-venturers plan to finalize feasibility engineering studies and select a field development plan by the end of March 1997. A decision on commerciality could come by late 1997 or early 1998.

The field is on Block ZOCA 91-13 some 185 miles off Australia and 140 miles south of Indonesia.
