Process industry companies from Europe, the Far East, and the U.S. have formed an organization called Process Industries Executive for Achieving Business Advantage using Standards for Data Exchange, abbreviated as "Piebase."

The purpose of Piebase is to garner the commercial, safety, and environmental benefits of exchanging and sharing electronic data among process-industry participants.

According to a Piebase press release, "The Piebase vision is that companies in the process industries shall be able to use internationally accepted standards to share and/or exchange electronically the information needed to design, build, operate, and maintain process and power plants."

Piebase expects to achieve those goals for a high-value subset of the desired information by 2000.

The organization is made up of consortia from The Netherlands, the U.K., Japan, the U.S., and Norway, and one global consortium. A total of 150 companies are participating, including:

  • Akzo Nobel Engineering

  • Shell International Oil Products b.v.

  • BP International

  • Shell International Petroleum Co.

  • Lloyd's Register

  • Asahi Engineering Co. Ltd.

  • Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.

  • DuPont Engineering

  • Merck & Co. Inc.

  • Black & Veatch

  • Petrotechnical Open Software Corp.

Initial activity will focus mainly on accelerating the development and implementation of ISO 10303, the International Standards Organization's standard for exchange of product model data.

An executive committee will direct activities. Working groups will be drawn from consortia members and other companies. The executive committee will meet twice per year, and a general meeting will be held annually.
