Ranger Oil (U.K.) Ltd. has started up production from Anglia gas field on southern U.K. North Sea Blocks 48/18b and 48/19b.

The field, developed at a cost of $120 million, has five producing wells including the longest horizontal well drilled in British waters. The A3Z well has a 3,568 ft horizontal section.

The previous record holder also was drilled in Anglia field by Ranger. The 48/18b-9, 3.1 miles to the west of the production platform, has a 2,936 ft horizontal section and is currently suspended.

Ranger said the two horizontal wells provided substantially increased productivity. Initial flow rates for the field are 90 MMcfd, but Ranger expects Anglia to average about 50 MMcfd through the plateau period.

The first 22 months of its life, Anglia's gas will be sold to BP Gas Marketing and Kinetica. For the rest of the field life, reserves have been sold under long term contract to National Power plc, for electric power generation.

Anglia went into production 13 months after its development approval was received, a record for this type of field in the U.K. sector, Ranger said. Ranger's partners are Conoco Developments Ltd., Elf U.K. plc, and Amerada Hess (E&P) Ltd.
