Shell Offshore Inc. has started production of Jurassic Norphlet gas from Fairway field in Alabama state waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell is producing from two of five wells drilled to depths of about 22,000 ft on Alabama state Blocks 113 and 132 about 3 miles south of Dauphin Island near the mouth of Mobile Bay. Four of the wells are on Block 113.

When all five wells are on line in first quarter 1992, Fairway gas output will climb to 200 MMcfd, making it Shell's largest gas producing field in the gulf.

With Fairway field at peak production, Shell's Gulf of Mexico gas production will have increased about 15%.

Shell is treating Fairway field gas at its Yellowhammer gas plant in South Mobile County, Ala. The company plans to sell Fairway production through Mobile Gas Service or the interstate pipeline system of Transco Gas Co., a unit of Transco Energy Co., Houston.

Mobil Exploration & Producing U.S. (Mepus) is the only other company producing Norphlet gas in the Mobile Bay area. Mepus in 1989 started production from Mary Ann field in Mobile Bay.

Fairway operator Shell Offshore owns 64.3% interest in the field and Amoco Production Co. 35.7%.
