TEXAS EASTERN SETTLES N.J. ENVIRONMENTAL TIFF
Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. (Tetco) has reached a settlement agreement with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Energy (DEP) resolving all outstanding issues related to handling polychlorinated biphenyl waste and other pipeline related environmental problems in New Jersey.
Tetco will pay an $850,000 civil penalty and $150,000 reimbursement to DEP for administrative costs in three installments-the first came Oct. 15, and the others will be Oct. 1, 1992, and Oct. 1, 1993. That resolves all violations DEP alleged in Tetco's use, transportation, storage, and disposal of pipeline liquids, PCBs, and other wastes. In a 1989 consent order with DEP, Tetco agreed to comprehensive study and cleanup of soil contamination resulting from its operations in New Jersey. Tetco has started cleanup work at its Hanover, Lambertville, and Linden compressor stations and a pipeline maintenance facility and has begun a detailed sampling of soils along its right of way in New Jersey. The current settlement does not affect cleanup work under the 1989 consent order but settles litigation dating to 1989.
