NEW ENGINE OIL SERVICE CATEGORY APPROVED BY API

A new service category of engine oil has been approved for inclusion in the API's Engine Oil Service Classification Symbol System. The new API CF-4 category of motor oils is for use in high-speed, four-stroke-cycle diesel engines. API CF-4 is particularly suited for onhighway, heavy duty truck applications. A new service category of engine oil has been approved for inclusion in the API's Engine Oil Service Classification Symbol System.

The new API CF-4 category of motor oils is for use in high-speed, four-stroke-cycle diesel engines. API CF-4 is particularly suited for onhighway, heavy duty truck applications. API CF-4 oils exceed the requirements of CE category oils and can be used in place of earlier API categories CC, CD, and CE oils. The new category is designed to provide improved control of oil consumption and piston deposits.

Use of the category in operating manuals of diesel engine and truck manufacturers and by engine oil marketers on containers of motor oil was authorized in December 1990.
