Qatar's plans for an LNG chain based on its massive North gas field are closing in on fruition.

Japan's Chubu Electric Power is involved in detailed talks on a 4 million ton/year LNG purchase contract with Qatar Liquefied Gas Co. (Qatargas).

North field, with more than 150 tcf of reserves, is the biggest offshore gas field in the world. Plans for an LNG operation have been delayed by lack of purchasers.

Preliminary work on the LNG project could start at the end of the year with first gas shipments planned for 1997.

Qatargas is 70% owned by Qatar General Petroleum Corp., with the remaining 30% shared equally by British Petroleum Co. plc, Total CFP, Marubeni Corp., and Mitsui & Co.

QGPC is working on the first stage of North field development-a six platform complex that will provide gas for domestic use.
