British Gas plc has gauged big flow rates in an appraisal to a significant oil discovery in the gas prone Gulf of Suez off Egypt.

BG and partners Union Pacific Petroleum Suez Ltd. and Yukong Ltd. plan to spud a second appraisal on Block BN-1 on the 82,800 acre North Zaafarana concession in early July.

The 2 Warda (HB 78.2) appraisal well flowed a combined 10,100 b/d of 14-23 gravity crude on tests of six intervals at 5,000-6,200 ft.

It was drilled to 9,111 ft about 1 km west of the 1 Warda discovery well.

The 1 Warda (HB 77-1), drilled to 6,000 ft flowed more than 7,500 b/d of 18-24 gravity oil on tests of five intervals (OGJ, Dec. 10, 1990, Newsletter).

Egyptian officials at the time called the discovery the most significant in the Gulf of Suez in almost a decade.

The discovery and appraisal are about 100 km from the nearest oil production.

The group also is exploring on the adjoining 155,700 acre South Zaafarana concession.

Interests are held by BG 50% and Union Pacific and Yukong 25% each.
