The redrill of a temporarily abandoned wildcat offered a solid boost for more exploratory drilling in Mist gas field, Oregon's only producing area.

Enerfin Resources Northwest, operator for itself and Bellwether Exploration Co., Houston, resumed operations in May 1998 for a redrill of the 32-27-65 well in 27-6n-5w, Columbia County, which bottomed at 2,084 ft before being temporarily abandoned in 1996.

Bellwether announced in July that the well had logged 57 ft of net gas pay in Eocene Clark and Wilson sand and flowed 1.8 MMcfd of gas.

Two 3D seismic surveys have been conducted and a third is being shot on 64,000 undeveloped acres in the area in which Bellwether owns a 50% working interest. More exploratory drilling is coming.

Enerfin, as operator, now has a state permit to drill a wildcat 11/2 miles northeast of the 32-27-65 well and is seeking permits to drill four more wildcats about 6 miles east and northeast of it. The existing permit is for drilling to Clark & Wilson sand at 2,240 ft in 23-6n-5w.

The other four permit locations applied for, all in Columbia County, and depths are: 22-6n-4w, 2,453 ft; 27-6n-4w, 2,324 ft; 27-6n-4w, 2,217 ft; and 23-6n-4w, 2,390 ft.

Mist field produced 1.4 bcf of gas last year. Nineteen wells-15 operated by Enerfin and four by Northwest Natural Gas-produced a combined 3.8 MMcfd of gas on the year, or about 202 Mcfd/well.

Early September 1998 production is about 3.6 MMcfd from 14 active wells, or 255 Mcfd/well.

Mist field, discovered in 1979 about 50 miles northwest of Portland, has produced 62 bcf of gas.
