NEWFOUNDLAND SEISMIC, WELL DATA MADE AVAILABLE
The Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board in St. John's, Newf., is making available a large database of information on the province's offshore areas.
Twenty significant hydrocarbon discoveries have resulted from the 140 wells drilled off Newfoundland since exploration started in 1964. More than 600,000 km of 2D, 3D, and high resolution seismic data have been shot. These data are available to prospective explorers of the area.
The data cover five geographic regions: Labrador Shelf (Saglek and Hopedale basins), Northeast Newfoundland shelf (St. Anthony and Orphan basins), North Grand Banks (Jeanne d'Arc and Flemish Pass basins and the Central ridge), South Grand Banks (Sydney, South Whale, Whale, Horseshoe, Carson, and Bonnition basins and Laurentian sub-basin), and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Anticosti basin and Bay St. George sub-basin).
The board and the Canada Oil & Gas Lands Commission began compiling a digital shotpoint database in 1986 of all seismic data shot on frontier lands. The system contains all of the more than 500,000 km of released 2D data and the majority of released 3D data shot off Newfoundland and Labrador.
The released 3D programs include a regional program over part of the Jeanne d'Arc basin and other programs that cover Hibernia and Terra Nova oil fields.
Another board publication, Released Geophysical and Geological Reports, lists industry reports and provides general information about the programs such as the area, completion date, and number of kilometers shot.
The board's Schedule of Wells contains geologic tops, conventional core intervals and recoveries, drillstem test data, repeat formation sampler data, and casing depths for nearly all of the 140 wells drilled off Newfoundland and Labrador.
Other well files contain well history reports, logs, velocity data, well test reports, pressure data, and oil, gas, and water analyses on all 140 wells. The board also operates a modem core storage and research center.
