Sun Co. plans to start a car scrapping program in the Philadelphia area.

It said the program will improve air quality in the area by taking older, high polluting automobiles off the road.

And Sun Chairman Robert H. Campbell noted, "At the same time, it is expected to generate emission trading credits that could provide Sun with future operating flexibility."

Sun will begin with a pilot program of buying about 150 pre-1980 cars for $700 each.

Sun will test a sample of the cars to determine the effectiveness of the program in reducing the main pollutants: carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides.

The program is much like Unocal Corp.'s vehicle scrapping program in California, certified by California's South Coast Air Quality Management District this year (OGJ, May 17, p. 24).

Campbell said Sun is still working out details and reviewing the program with state and local government agencies, but the pilot project start-up should be announced before the end of the month.
