Shell Oil Co. last week reported contributions to its relief effort for victims of Hurricane Andrew topped $1 million.
Bill Schutzenhofer, Shell vice president of marketing, said branded service station retailers by Sept. 11 had contributed more than $1 million to storm relief efforts.
Shell retailers in 40 states gave l/gal of gasoline sold during Sept. 1-15 to help hurricane victims in Florida and Louisiana.
Schutzenhofer praised "the outpouring of support from our family of retailers."
He said, "The response from our customers has been tremendous, and it is truly heartwarming to see the results of hours of hard work from Shell volunteers throughout the country."
Many other companies in the U.S. petroleum industry are contributing to relief efforts (OGJ, Sept. 14, p. 39).
SHELL'S GOAL
Shell set a goal of raising $1.5 million in retailer and corporate contributions to the Andrew relief effort.
The company made a $250,000 corporate donation to the American Red Cross and distributed almost $500,000 to buy relief items in Florida and Louisiana. Shell also gave $25,000 to the city of Franklin, La., to help rebuild school buildings damaged by the storm.
Shell volunteers through Sept. 13 had distributed hundreds of tons of essentials to as many as 9,000 victims/day from a Shell tent on Highway 1 in Homestead, Fla., ravaged by the storm. The tent was turned over to local relief agencies Sept. 14. Shell plans to use contributions remaining after the tent closes to fill longer term relief needs.
In addition, Shell employees throughout the U.S. collected more than 10 tons of canned goods, clothing, and other essentials for the relief effort.
