STAR AGREES TO SPILL SETTLEMENT

Star Enterprise has agreed to a settlement that could cost it more than $200 million involving a dispute with homeowners in Fairfax, Va., affected by 100,000-200,000 gal of refined products that leaked from a tank farm. Star agreed to buy homes near the underground spill and pay compensation to those affected. Star, one of four oil companies operating the storage site, accepted responsibility and agreed to pay cleanup costs.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency levied a $205,000 fine against Star for the spill and for allegedly failing to provide data on an antileak system. Star plans to appeal.
