The market for gas in Mexico is poised for more growth.

Mexico's power company, Commission Federal de Electricidad (CFE), is accepting bids for construction and start-up of a $700 million, 700,000 kw power plant, known as the Salamayuca project, that will burn about 120 MMcfd of gas. The plant is to be built near Ciudad Juarez.

Transco Energy Ventures Co., Houston, and Duke Energy Corp., Charlotte, N.C., have agreed to jointly pursue development of the project, which would supply power to the Ciudad Juarez industrial zone.

Notimex Mexican News Service reported a group including Bechtel Group Inc., Coastal Corp., El Paso Natural Gas Co., General Electric Co., and Mexico's Grupo Ica also formed a partnership to bid for the plant.

Department of Energy figures show the U.S. shipped 299 MMcfd of gas to Mexico in fourth quarter 1991 (OGJ, Apr. 6, p. 21).
