Unocal Corp. plans to start sales on Jan. 1, 1994, of natural gas from its record flow rate, deep Jurassic Norphlet strike in the Mobile area off Mississippi.

Unocal plans to spend $20 million for a two slot wellhead platform, a processing platform, and an accommodation platform to develop the Block 904 field discovery. Initial production is pegged at 30-40 MMcfd.

Unocal drilled the discovery well, which tested 97.6 MMcfd through a 42/64 in. choke from upper Jurassic Norphlet at 22,130-22,290 ft in 61 ft of water on Block 904 about 45 miles southwest of Mobile, Ala. (OGJ, Feb. 17, p. 28). The pay zone is in a high temperature, high geopressure reservoir.

The processing platform will have facilities to treat the gas, which has at 120 ppm a relatively low hydrogen sulfide content compared with other production in the Mobile area. At 80 MMcfd capacity, it can handle Unocal's share of gas from nearby partner operated properties.
