Germany's Wintershall Erdgas West GmbH is poised to step up natural gas sales.

It has signed a 20 year contract to supply gas to Hamburger Gaswerke GmbH (HGW). Wintershall will provide 30-51 bcf/year to the Hamburg utility starting in 1994.

The gas will come from Russia and the Dutch offshore Markham field via the Midal pipeline operated by Wintershall and Russia's Gazprom. It will be stored in a new 100 bcf unit at Rehden, Lower Saxony.

The final part of its journey will be through a 75 mile pipeline between Rehden and Heidenau, which will be under construction in 1993. Pipeline partners will be HGW with a majority interest and the Wintershall-Gazprom joint venture.

HGW currently sells 92 bcf/year.
