Sherman A. Wengerd, geological consultant and professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico, has been selected as the 1992 recipient of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Sidney Powers Memorial Medal. He will receive the award at the AAPG annual meeting in Calgary in June. Wengerd, of Albuquerque, pioneered UNM's geology program. He joined the faculty there in 1947. Before that he was an exploration geologist with Shell Oil Co.

Retiring from UNM in 1976, he also was an active consultant. The discovery of oil in the Four Comers region of the U.S. was credited to his initial research.
