A joint venture led by a Texaco Inc. unit has gauged an oil discovery on the El Jem Permit in Tunisia, about 170 km south-southeast of Tunis.
The 1 El Jem flowed at a rate of 3,600 b/d of 42 gravity oil through a 7/16 in. choke from upper Cretaceous Bireno carbonate at 10,990-11,230 ft. Total depth is 13,134 ft.
Texaco Exploration El Jem Tunisia Inc. operates the permit with a 60% interest. Conquest Exploration Tunisia Inc., a subsidiary of American Exploration Co., Houston, holds the remaining interest.
The wildcat is the first drilled by the joint venture on the 987,000 acre permit. Texaco said extensive evaluation is planned to quantify its potential.
Texaco obtained a farmout from Conquest on the acreage late in 1990 in exchange for agreeing to spend as much as $10 million in a 3 year exploration period (OGJ, Dec. 17, 1990, p. 32).
