CGG American Services Inc., Houston, has completed the interpretation of its first Megaregional seismic line in northeastern Algeria.

The 400 km Line EW2-1 extends from the Tunisian border south of El Borma oil and gas field to the area northwest of Hassi Messaoud oil field, passing near a recent AGIP SpA discovery in Block 403.

The Algerian Megaregional project is being carried out in cooperation with the state oil concern Sonatrach. It aims to establish a regional geologic framework that can help companies decide where to focus exploration efforts.

Mid-term goals for the project are to extend the current line westward to the Moroccan border and complete two north-south lines extending from the Hoggar massif to the Mediterranean Sea.

After compiling the seismic data for Line EW2-1 CGG and a Sonatrach geologist prepared a detailed geologic and seismic interpretation of the seismic line. The work has been gathered into a package that includes seismic data (at several scales), a detailed lithostratigraphic cross section, a Hercynian subcrop and structure map, a production and show map, and 10 composite well logs.

Additional logs and seismic tapes are available separately, and the package is available for licensing to the industry.

The Algerian project is part of CGG's International Megaregional Project, which is being conducted on behalf of a consortium of 17 oil companies. The consortium plans to conduct megaregional projects in South America, Southeast Asia, and the C.I.S.
