Malta, with no hydrocarbon production, is poised for more exploration. Amoco Mediterranean Petroleum Co., Agip International BV, and the government of Malta have signed a production sharing contract covering 837,700 acres about 60 miles off the country's southern coast,

The contract covers Blocks 3 and 4 in License Area 4 and calls for seismic acquisition and drilling at least one well during the next 3 years. Amoco is operator of the contract area with 60% working interest, and Agip holds the remainder.

Amoco has more than 1.7 million acres under contract around Malta and is drilling a wildcat in License Area 3, north of Malta, where it operates Blocks 2 and 3 with BHP Petroleum Co. (OGJ, Aug. 13, 1990, p. 34).
