Development drilling has begun in Bongkot, a giant gas field in the Gulf of Thailand due for mid 1993 start up.

Drilling of the first of 27 producers is under way via the Smedvig Robray T 1 tender assisted drilling rig. A second rig, the Sedco 602 semisubmersible, late last month was to begin drilling the first of six back to back appraisal/delineation wells. The wells will be drilled from three wellhead platforms installed earlier this year as part of the first phase of development, to be complete by yearend 1993. Installation of a gas production platform, associated facilities, and a floating condensate storage facility will begin in December. Total in August opened a logistics base in Thailand's southern province of Songkhla to support the offshore operations.

Total said work related to field development is on track, with production expected to start in the second half of May and plateau at 150 MMcfd from mid June on. Total operates the concession on behalf of a group including Thailand's PTT Exploration & Production, British Gas plc, and Den norske stats oljeselskap AS.

Meantime, Total Khorat Ltd. has completed an 890 line km seismic survey in the northeastern Thai province of Sakhon Nakhon. The survey was shot on Block 5743, owned jointly by the Total unit and Royal Dutch/Shell Group unit Thai Shell. Committed to drill two exploratory wells on the block by Aug. 28, 1994, Total plans to spud the first in second half 1993.
