Mobil Oil Australia has a green light from Victoria's state government to proceed with its proposed $1 billion (Australian) upgrade of the Altona refinery near Melbourne.
The 10 year project will improve the 98,500 b/d Altona refinery's ability to process a broader slate of world crude feedstocks. Mobil currently receives most of its crude feedstock via pipeline from declining fields in the Bass Strait off Victoria. The upgrade also will improve the refinery's environmental performance and trim production costs to world competitive levels.
About $190 million (Australian) will be spent and 1,000 construction jobs created during the first 3 years of the project. Altona supplies about 50% of Victoria's refined products demand as well as feedstock for the nearby Altona petrochemical complex.
