KAZAKH RADIATION STUDY UNDER WAY

Sept. 7, 1992
Reports that Soviet underground nuclear tests, carried out from 1962 to 1984, may have contaminated Kazakh oil and gas reserves are being investigated by British Gas plc and Agip SpA. Two initial studies of Karachaganak field in Northwest Kazahstan, under negotiation for further development by the two companies, have found no radioactivity. A full environmental study is now under way, which will include further radiation tests. Karachaganak has been on stream since 1986 (OGJ, July 13, p. 24).
