Namibia's Ministry of Mines and Energy has awarded the second exploration license in its first licensing round to Ranger Oil Ltd., Calgary.
Ranger was awarded License Area 9913 covering about 5,170 sq km in the Walvis basin off northern Namibia.
Ranger, one of four entities seeking the license, has committed to drill an undisclosed number of deep wells and spend at least $800,000 training Namibians during the first 4 years of the license .
A formal agreement is to be signed in Windhoek in July. Namibia awarded the first exploration license in its first round to a group including Norsk Hydro AS, Den norske stats oljeselskap AS, and Saga Petroleum AS (OGJ, Apr. 27, p. 31).
The government announced Namibia's first petroleum licensing round in May 1991 and closed applications Nov. 1, 1991. The government's negotiating team began talks with selected groups last January. Because of a large number of bids, negotiations are to continue well into second half 1992.
