Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. has made good progress in improving operations and maintenance of the trans-Alaska crude oil pipeline.

However, the process is taking longer than expected, says the General Accounting Office.

The congressional watchdog agency reports Alyeska had corrected 3,030, or 62%, of 4,920 deficiencies, including structural problems, as of Apr. 30. There have been delays because more problems were found than anticipated and employee training took longer than expected.

GAO added the December 1996 target date for completion of all deficiencies is too optimistic.

GAO praised Alyeska for making substantial progress in improving the oil pipeline's electrical integrity, quality, and maintenance.
