KAUFMAN AND OLIVER GIVEN HEDBERG PRIZE
Drs. Sidney Kaufman and Jack E. Oliver of Cornell University, who have played leading roles in many major developments in seismology, are the 1990 recipients of The Hollis D. Hedberg Award in Energy, presented by the Institute for the Study of Earth and Man at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
"The work of Sidney Kaufman and Jack Oliver is of great significance to our understanding of the earth's continental crust, especially with regard to its deep structure," says Dr. James E. Brooks, president of ISEM. "Their work has given all geologists, including certainly those who explore for hydrocarbons, a new perspective that has enhanced the effectiveness of our search for oil and gas, especially in those areas heretofore considered to be barren."
The awards were given Apr. 19. The Hollis D. Hedberg Award in Energy, set up in 1983, honors the late Dr. Hedberg, who was a pioneer of petroleum geology in Venezuela and a major figure in the U.S. petroleum industry.
New officers. Fred M. Thompson Jr., an independent petroleum geologist and oil and gas operator from Corpus Christi, will be installed as president of SIPES. Other new officers for the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists, are Vice President Victor E. Ratliff of Oklahoma City, Vice President of Natural Resources, Lucius C. Geer of Houston, Secretary Roy C. Walther of New Orleans, and Treasurer Jon F. Cobb of Dallas.
