A u.s. warship has intercepted a tanker carrying fuel loaded in Iraq and diverted it to Kuwait, Reuters news agency reported.
The U.S.S. Leyte Gulf guided missile cruiser stopped the Al Mahrousa tanker Oct. 22 in international waters in the northern Persian Gulf. Naval and Coast Guard personnel boarded the tanker.
The vessel reportedly was carrying more than 3,000 metric tons of diesel fuel. A later report said Capt. Izzat Abdulhadi Khalifa, master of Al Mahrousa, admitted loading at the Iraqi port of Zubayr between Oct. 16 and 19.
The tanker was said to be a Russian built, Saudi owned, Honduran flagged vessel with an Egyptian and Pakistani crew.
