EIA: US petroleum exports set monthly record in April on stronger global demand

In April, US petroleum exports soared to a record 13.6 million b/d, driven by global supply disruptions and increased demand, with crude oil and propane leading the surge.

US petroleum exports climbed to an all-time monthly high of 13.6 million b/d in April as buyers turned to US supplies amid disruptions to crude oil and refined product movements through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The April total surpassed the previous record established in March by 15%.

Crude oil remained the largest US petroleum export, averaging a record 5.6 million b/d during the month. The volume exceeded the previous high, set in December 2023, by 21%.

Propane exports also reached a milestone, topping 2.0 million b/d for the first time in monthly data. Distillate fuel oil exports averaged 1.6 million b/d, their strongest monthly performance since July 2017.

Finished petroleum product exports—including distillate fuel oil, motor gasoline, jet fuel, and petroleum coke—rose to their highest level since December 2024. The increase came even as motor gasoline exports remained near recent average levels.

Jet fuel, unfinished oils, and naphtha exports eased slightly from the record levels posted in March but continued to rank among the highest monthly volumes on record.

EIA's recent weekly data indicate export strength continued into May and June. Crude oil, distillate fuel oil, jet fuel, and propane shipments remained above the 5-year (2021-25) seasonal range during both months, reflecting sustained international demand for US petroleum supplies.
