Harbour appointed operator of Zama oil project offshore Mexico
Harbour Energy plc has been appointed as operator of the Zama oil project offshore Mexico.
Front-end engineering and design on the approved development concept was completed in early 2025. Next steps include completing engineering and design work this year ahead of a final investment decision. That decision has been delayed by ownership disputes in recent years after unitization was required as it was determined Zama field lies within neighboring blocks.
Harbour’s appointment as operator of the Zama project was agreed by unit partners Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Grupo Carso, and Talos Energy. The companies hold the option to appoint “key personnel” into Harbour’s project team, Harbour said in a release Dec. 31.
The agreement was approved by SENER (Mexico’s Ministry of Energy).
Zama oil field, discovered in 2017 by Talos Energy and appraised in 2018 and 2019, is estimated to contain about 750 MMboe of gross recoverable resources. The field lies about 63.5 km off the coast of Tabasco, in the Southeast basin.
Harbour has a 32.22% operated interest in Zama. Partners are Pemex (50.4%) and Talos Energy Mexico (17.35%).
