Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board is responding to a leak that occurred June 7 on Plains Midstream Canada’s 83,000 b/d Rangeland pipeline. The Rangeland system totals 761 miles of trunk and gathering line.

An estimated 1,000-3,000 bbl of light, sour crude entered the Red Deer River via Jackson Creek, near Sundre, Alta., about 80 miles northwest of Calgary.

The pipeline is shut in and emergency responders are on site. ERCB said it had not confirmed volumes at this time and the cause of the leak is under investigation, as is the precise location and nature of the failure.

Plains suffered a 28,000-bbl leak on its Rainbow pipeline in Alberta May 2011.
