ALBERTA SULFUR PLANT FINISHED
Shell Canada Ltd. has inaugurated a plant in Alberta to process gas from a reservoir developed solely for its sulfur.
The $55 million Bearberry pilot plant near Sundre, 90 miles north of Calgary, is designed to use a hot oil solvent process to produce 200 metric tons/day of sulfur from gas containing more than 90% hydrogen sulfide.
It will operate for as long as 5 years to evaluate the reservoir and test economic and technical feasibility of commercial development.
The Bearberry reservoir is near Caroline gas field with an estimated 2 tcf of reserves, approved for development by Shell and several partners (OGJ, Sept. 10, p. 44).
Shell said integration of Bearberry and Caroline would produce a sulfur recovery rate of 99.9% and set a new standard of environmental protection.
Shell's Bearberry partners are Mobil Oil Canada Ltd., PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd., and Norcen Energy Resources Ltd.
