Oil & Natural Gas Corp. used help from military airborne rescuers to repair a leak of natural gas in rough seas from an unstaffed wellhead platform in southern Mumbai High field.
Wind speeds up to 35 knots, swells of 3.5 m, and strong surface currents prevented the state-owned company from using a helicopter or support vessel to place engineers on the troubled S1-6 platform, about 180 km from shore in the Arabian Sea.
After shutting down the platform remotely, bleeding pressure off pipelines, and deploying firefighting vessels to the location, ONGC contacted the Indian Navy.
A helicopter crew quickly trained four ONGC engineers then flew them to the platform and lowered them by winch to platform deck.
