Regulation of oil and gas development in Alberta will be consolidated under legislation passed Nov. 22.
The Responsible Energy Development Act authorizes a new body called the Alberta Energy Regulator to assume regulatory functions now performed by the Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development for oil, natural gas, oil sands, and coal.
The bureau will be governed by a board of directors headed by a chief executive officer. It’s expected to be operational by June 2013.
