Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. holds nearly 60,000 net acres in the oil window of the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas, just a few hours away from its headquarters in Houston, but the focus for this independent natural gas producer is the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania.

With over 200,000 acres in the northeast portion of Pennsylvania, many man hours are spent in the region. Recently, the company improved production beyond the 400 MMcf/d mark from its Marcellus wells, but that's not all its working to improve. Cabot is also focused on improving the communities in which it operates.

In May, the company began an effort to bolster the support of True Friends Animal Welfare Center, a non-profit community-based organization dedicated to operating the former Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) in Montrose, PA.

The company pledged to match all new donations from the community through June 22, up to $10,000, to assist True Friends in keeping high-quality animal welfare services in Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties. The challenge grant was held in collaboration with The Community Foundation of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties.

"Cabot is very pleased to be able to help in this way," said George Stark, director external affairs for Cabot Oil & Gas, "but truly it is the work of the dedicated staff, volunteers and generous neighbors that makes all the difference in creating and sustaining this successful, thriving animal shelter."

The Susquehanna County Humane Society was founded in the 1930s and became part of the PSPCA in the 1990s. During its 80 years of existence, the organization of dedicated staff and volunteers has saved the lives of thousands of animals and brought tremendous happiness to the many citizens who have adopted them. Throughout the years the center has been a key asset to the community. True Friends provides three essential benefits to the region, they: minimize public health hazards by assisting in the control of stray animals, rescue innocent animals from a lifetime of neglect and suffering, and they match animals with loving families. True Friends remains committed to the tradition of excellence in the humane treatment of animals. During 2010 alone, over 1,000 animals were adopted from the animal welfare center.

"True Friends is extremely grateful for the generosity and support of Cabot Oil & Gas. We are thrilled to have them leading the way in energizing the community with this significant challenge grant," stated Dory Browning, president of the True Friends Board of Directors, "Our team recognizes that Cabot is a good corporate citizen for our community. We are thrilled to have them as our partner."

Up for the challenge, the community raised the $10,000 that Cabot quickly matched. Over $20,000 was sent to True Friends to keep animal welfare in the area.

Encouraged by the support of both the community and Cabot Oil & Gas, Browning expressed her appreciation. "The community stepped up to meet the challenge," she said, noting that True Friends is continuing its quest with the help of Cabot.

"Besides this funding we are building a valued partnership with the company and have a Cabot employee, Janice Lobdell, onboard working with us on our goals. As a start-up organization, we still need a great deal of funding to keep our only local non-kill shelter open. Every dollar counts and goes directly to helping our animal friends in need."

Donations for True Friends can be sent to the Community Foundation of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties @ 270 Lake Avenue, Montrose, PA 18801. The shelter is located at Rt 706 & 29 in Montrose, PA. Anyone interested in adoption or volunteering can stop by or call the shelter at 570-278-1228. Find the organization online at www.community-foundation.org.
