HOUSTON, Apr. 2 -- Petro-Canada, Calgary, and partners Occidental Petroleum Corp. and London-based Petrofac Ltd. are negotiating a production-sharing contract with the Syrian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to develop gas reserves in Syria's Palmyra area for use in the country's power generating markets.

Petro-Canada will be operator of the project—known as the North and South Middle Area gas project—which is targeted for start-up in 2007. It involves appraising and developing as many as 15 gas discoveries found in two clusters: one east of Homs and one the other southeast of Alleppo. Two gas treatment and separation plants also are planned.
