Chad will end its complete dependence on imported products with its first project that involves field development and construction of a small grassroots refinery.
Exxon Corp. will develop a small oil field in the Lake Chad area. It will be linked by pipeline to a 3,300 b/d refinery in the capital N'Djamena, 198 miles southeast, that will be operated by the Royal Dutch/Shell Group.
Exxon, in partnership with Shell, found and appraised Sedigi field and will develop the field's 12 million bbl reserves. It is expected to be on stream in 1994, producing about 2,000 b/d.
Ste. d'Etudes et d'Exploitation de la Raffinerie du Tchad, a joint venture of the government, Shell, Exxon, and Chevron Corp., has let a contract to Technip of France to manage construction of the refinery, a 12,000 kw power station, and the pipeline. The project will be financed in part by World Bank.
