ANADARKO SLATES EXPLORATION ON TRACTS IN S. CHINA SEA
Anadarko China Co. plans an exploration program on 2.9 million acres off China in the South China Sea.
The wholly owned subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum Corp., Houston, acquired a 50% interest in a production sharing contract covering Block 28/28 and a geophysical survey agreement covering Block 27/06 from Pecten Orient Co. Pecten Orient is a unit of Pecten International Co., whose parent is Shell Oil Co.
Anadarko China, which will become operator of both blocks Sept. 1, expects to drill one wildcat on each tract during 1992. They lie about 125 miles south of Hong Kong.
Pecten Orient acquired the acreage in 1989 under agreements with China National Offshore Oil Co. Talks aimed at converting the geophysical agreement to a production sharing contract are under way with Cnooc.
Exploration on the blocks so far involves acquisition of more than 4,600 km of seismic data.
Anadarko China plans to open an office in Shekou, Shenzhen province, about 40 miles northwest of Hong Kong, this month.
