Galveston Bay field nears production start

TransTexas Gas Corp. and Davis Petroleum Corp. are taking steps to start gas production from Eagle Point (Vicksburg) gas/condensate field in Galveston Bay. The companies said the 3 State Tract 331 confirmation well flowed at a rate of 41 MMcfd of gas and 10,700 b/d of condensate with 3,750 psi FTP. Condensate flow reached the capacity of the test equipment on the barge. The well is 1/2 mile northeast of the discovery well.

TransTexas hopes to start production in April from three wells, including the discovery well, that have flowed gas and condensate from Vicksburg on Block 331. Electric logs have indicated production possibilities in Frio sands. Capacity of condensate separation facilities will restrict production to 1,500 b/d initially.

The operator began laying a 3.2 mile pipeline to connect the Eagle Point platform with a Tejas Gas Corp. 18 in. line that crosses the bay between Texas City and Smith Point. It also concluded transportation and marketing agreements that allow production of up to 150 MMcfd of gas and 37,500 b/d of condensate. NGL processing could yield a further 17,000 b/d of NGL.

Consulting engineers estimated gross proved reserves in Block 331 at 247 bcf of gas equivalent at Jan. 31, 1998, based on the discovery well production test data and log analysis of the first two wells.

TransTexas said total reserves in Eagle Point field net to its 75% interest are 142 bcfe proved, 139 bcfe probable, and 366 bcfe possible.

The companies plan 8-10 Vicksburg wells to establish field extent. The first well on an adjacent fault block in S.T. 352 has been drilling since early February. The company obtained drilling permits for 18,000 ft wells on state tracts 330 and 332. All of the sites are in the Galveston County portion of the bay.

Meanwhile, east of the Bay in Chambers County, Cabot Oil & Gas Co., Houston, completed a Vicksburg discovery to reactivate Chimney Bayou field, idle since 1985.

The 1 Broussard-Middleton flowed 1.261 MMcfd of gas, 199 b/d of 48.4° gravity condensate, and 6 b/d of water on a 9/64 in. choke with 4,435 psi FTP from perforations at 11,8784-940 ft, Petroleum Information/Dwights LLC reported.
