The government of Pakistan has awarded a petroleum exploration and development concession to a group led by Union Texas Pakistan Inc. (UTPI), a subsidiary of Union Texas Petroleum Holdings Inc., Houston.

The Badin II concession area covers about 2,631 sq miles in Sindh province of Southeast Pakistan. Operator UTPI and Occidental Petroleum Pakistan, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corp., each own a 25.3% interest in the joint venture, while Oil & Gas Development Corp. (OGDC), a Pakistani government owned company, holds 49%.

The partners plan to spend about $5 million this year for seismic surveys of the Badin If block. The venture plans to drill one wildcat on concession acreage during the first year of the agreement.

The Badin II area surrounds the Badin I concession area, awarded in April 1977 to the same UTPI group. In 1991, venture partners produced an average 144 MMcfd of gas, up 33% from 1990 average production, and 17,300 b/d of oil, accounting for about 25% of Pakistan's oil production.

Badin I's 1991 oil production was limited by export transportation constraints.

UTPI and partners have discovered 29 oil and gas fields on the Badin I block. Eleven of them are on production.

UTPI and Occidental Pakistan each own a 30% interest in Badin I and OGDC 40%.
