Construction on a 3,600-hp compressor station on the Louisiana line of Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America near Henry, La., was scheduled for completion later this month.

The Louisiana line extends some 205 miles along the Gulf Coast between New Caney, Tex., and the Henry hub area. The new compressor station will be located about 44 miles west of the Henry hub.

Work began on the $5.1 million expansion project in Cameron Parish, La., in May following Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) certification. General contractor for the project has been W.H.C. Inc., of Lafayette, La.

By mid-September, the compressor building, service building, and meter house had been erected, final compressor inspections were under way, and gas piping tie-ins had been completed, according to NGPL.

Powered by three 1,200-hp Solar Saturn gas-fired centrifugal engines, the station is designed to increase the capacity of the Louisiana line east of the Stingray pipeline system by up to 220 MMcfd. Current capacity for east bound flows is approximately 900 MMcfd.

GAS MOVEMENTS

Gas destined for East Coast markets from the Midcontinent, South Texas, offshore Louisiana, and other production areas is moved eastward by NGPL to interconnections with other pipelines.

The Louisiana line also moves offshore gas west to NGPL's Gulf Coast transmission system.

NGPL says the Louisiana line's capacity to deliver gas to the Henry hub pipeline interchange south of Erath has been fully subscribed for the past 2 years, and the pipeline has been unable to accommodate the full volume of firm transportation requests.

NGPL operates some 12,800 miles of interstate natural-gas transmission pipelines in 12 Midcontinent states, and provides natural gas sales, storage, and transportation services for other pipelines, producers, marketers, distribution companies, and end-users. Last year, it delivered 1.5 tcf of gas.

NGPL is a subsidiary of MidCon Corp., a unit of Occidental Petroleum Corp., Los Angeles.
